MAGAL Spring 2024 Conference (In Person and Online):
"They're Watching You . . . The Purpose and Practice of Supervised Parenting in Family Court"
May 9, 2024
8:30 AM - 1:00 PM (Breakfast and snacks included)
The Conference Center at Waltham Woods
860 Winter Street
Waltham, MA 02451
Supervised parenting may seem like a simple, straightforward intervention when a child requires protection from a compromised parent or to protect a parent from unwarranted allegations. Instead, it should be recognized as a powerful and complex tool that can have a profound impact on a family. Once implemented, the supervisor usually becomes part of the system in which parenting is under scrutiny. Whether supervision should or should not continue can become a flashpoint for conflict.
Those who conduct supervision for the court must adhere to a professional standard. Because an order for parenting time is so important, it is critical to understand the appropriate criteria for determining when supervision is required and when it is no longer necessary.
With recognition of the pivotal and professional role which supervisors play, this conference will explain the genesis of the new rules for fee generating supervision appointments. Presenters will include clinicians with experience in assessing the need for supervised contact in custody disputes and in providing supervision services, a retired Judge with experience in issuing supervision orders, and attorneys who litigate the cases.
Learning Objectives
Conference participants will learn the following:
- What triggers the need for a parent’s contact to be overseen by a professional supervisor? For terminating supervision?

- What role might a visitation supervisor play in a custody evaluation?
- How can orders be crafted to ensure that supervision does not become permanent unintentionally?
