WORKSHOP TOPIC: "I Do, and I Understand: Your Chance to Do Safe Role Plays"
PRESENTERS: John Fiske, Justin Kelsey and Ellen Waldorf
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:
The problem: The private nature of mediation prevents mediators from watching others mediate or showing how we mediate.
The solution: Using the Gary Friedman model of role play, we will create a safe space where you will have the opportunity to:
- watch a mediation
- be the mediator
- be an observer/moderator to guide the discussion for other mediators
- be each client, to see what it must feel like
Just like mediation itself, participation in role plays is voluntary but workshop participants are warmly encouraged to take part.
In groups of four:
- one of you is the moderator, who begins the discussion by asking the mediator, "What do you want to work on?"
- one of you is client Bill Johnson
- one of you is client Sally Johnson
- one of you is the mediator
After 5 minutes of mediation the moderator stops and asks the mediator, "What kind of feedback do you want?" After 5 or so minutes of discussion you all change roles. You repeat the process until each of you has been in all 4 roles. You can also discuss what it felt like to be the client.
Then we all discuss what happened and what we learned until it's 4:00 or we go home, whichever occurs first.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:
John Fiske will lead this interactive workshop, with assistance from Justin Kelsey and Ellen Waldorf.
John Fiske began his family mediation career with 4 people in his waiting room sent by the court: husband, wife and their lawyers. Once they were seated in his conference room where he wanted them to be, the wife said, "We understand we are some sort of experiment!" That was 1979 and we are all still experimenting. John has been training family mediators and using role plays since 1989. He learned the Gary Friedman model in1995 when he took an intensive 5-day program at the Harvard Program on Negotiation.
Justin Kelsey and Ellen Waldorf have been training family mediators for several years and have recently taken over Divorce Mediation Training Associates.
