WORKSHOP TOPIC:  "Dealing with Implicit (Unconscious) and Explicit (Conscious) Bias During Mediation"

PRESENTER:  Tonisha "Dr. Toni" Pinckney, Ph.D., MSCJ, MAFF, CFE

When dealing with people from backgrounds, religions, or lifestyles other than one’s own, bias can easily creep in during the mediation process. One way to mitigate mediator bias is through self-awareness and self-leadership. This interactive presentation is designed to (1) identify various forms of racial/ethnic, gender, age, and LGBTQ+ bias, (2) identify ways that bias can impact the mediation process and potential outcomes, (3) consider how bias can impact other aspects of life (work, education, socializing, parenting) of the divorcing parties, and (4) discuss ways to mitigate the impact of bias during the mediation process. Participants will have an opportunity for role-playing and audience engagement is strongly desired.

Dr. Tonisha “Dr. Toni” Pinckney is dedicated to educating and advocating for others. The founder of Revelatus Specialized Accounting & Consulting in Worcester, she has a wide range of expertise, supported by 16 years of combined experience. She is a criminologist and criminal justice expert – as well as a forensic accountant, certified fraud examiner, master analyst in financial forensics, and trained mediator. Dr. Toni has authored several books, including "My Turn to Lead: Fundamentals of Leadership" and "Influence for New and Emerging Leaders."

She has a baccalaureate degree in Accounting from Kean University (NJ), Master of Science in Criminal Justice from University of Cincinnati (OH), a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice and Criminology from the University of Massachusetts Lowell, and a host of other academic and professional certificates and education. Dr. Toni is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Salem State University and a Lecturer at Lasell University. She also serves on several boards, including the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Massachusetts, and is the President (elect) of the Board of Trustees of the Worcester Recovery Center & Hospital.

Dr. Toni is an outspoken author, advocate, and activist on mental illness and health awareness and on issues related to racial, socioeconomic, and gender disparities and discrimination. She also coaches, mentors, and speaks on a host of business topics related to leadership, entrepreneurship, diversity-inclusion-equity, ethics, and more.
