WORKSHOP TOPIC:  "Dealing with Implicit (Unconscious) and Explicit (Conscious) Bias During Mediation"

PRESENTER:  Tonisha "Dr. Toni" Pinckney, Ph.D., MSCJ, MAFF, CFE

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:

When dealing with people from backgrounds, religions, or lifestyles other than one’s own, bias can easily creep in during the mediation process. One way to mitigate mediator bias is through self-awareness and self-leadership. This interactive presentation is designed to (1) identify various forms of racial/ethnic, gender, age, and LGBTQ+ bias, (2) identify ways that bias can impact the mediation process and potential outcomes, (3) consider how bias can impact other aspects of life (work, education, socializing, parenting) of the divorcing parties, and (4) discuss ways to mitigate the impact of bias during the mediation process. Participants will have an opportunity for role-playing and audience engagement is strongly desired.
